Autumn Topic Map – Topic Map WW2 Year 5-6
Welcome to Year 5/6! The curriculum for this half term is based on the theme ‘World War 2’. This topic involves work in all the ‘core’ and ‘foundation’ subjects outlined in the Primary National Curriculum. On the reverse is a brief outline of what we hope to cover during the next half term.
Your child will receive homework each week to support their classroom learning. Homework books will be given out each Tuesday and collected the following Monday. Weekly homework will also include reading, times tables and spellings practice which will be tested on a regular basis (spellings – Monday). Children are required to make a note of their weekly reading on the homework cover sheet and work on their Reading Scrapbook (handing in on a Monday) as evidence of their reading. In the front of the Reading Scrapbook, you will find a list of questions that you can ask your child about their reading to support their learning.
If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s homework please feel free to contact me. In order to do homework effectively children will need pencils, a ruler, rubber and colouring pencils. There is also a ‘Homework Hints’ sheet on the front of your child’s homework book. Your support with homework will be a great help.
Kit consists of the school t-shirt, black shorts and trainers or P.E. shoes. Football shirts are not appropriate. As some of the work will be outdoor, children will also need a jumper and jogging bottoms as the weather becomes colder. We do not have spare kit in school so it is essential that children come to school equipped for every P.E lesson. Other P.E events may occur during the week so bringing kit each Monday and taking it home for washing on Fridays works well and ensures children have the necessary equipment.
After School Clubs
As usual there will be many After School Clubs starting up. It is important that your child attends any club they have signed up for each week. If they cannot attend for a particular reason, please inform school by phone or provide a written note. Please make sure your child is collected on time. All dates for each club are on the timetable provided at the beginning of each half term.
As we are a ‘Healthy School’, children are encouraged to bring a named water bottle to school to keep in the classroom so that they can have a drink when they need one. This must be taken home each night, cleaned, and returned full the following day. They are also welcome to bring a piece of fruit or vegetable to eat at break time. We also have our school healthy tuck shop where snacks are available at break-time for 50p.
This year the SATs will be the week beginning Monday 14th May 2018. This is a very important week for your child as these are the end of Key Stage Statutory Attainment Tests. Please avoid booking family holidays around this time as they will not be authorised. We also have assessments in other year groups at this time too!
Please remember that all key dates and latest school news can be found on our school Facebook page. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by coming into school, phone or email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Thank you for your support and Happy New School Year!
